Fracking water can be considered a by-product of the process of extracting natural gas from shale formations below the surface of the earth. Millions of gallons of water is pumped into the shale under high pressure to cause the rock to explode, some of which rises to the surface but only after it has been contaminated by chemicals and the gas itself. There is no doubt that there is natural gas in beds of rock but questions have been raised about the sacrifices that nature, and ultimately people, will have to make.
The question of whether mankind in general should allow oil companies to produce or find oil or gas in whatever way they can to keep the economy going. It is not just a consideration of ecological damage. The greatest concern is the impact that such activity may have on people and their ability to survive.
Similarly, the issue with fracking water is that man does not know the consequences of fracking to obtain natural gas. Until every minute consequence has been established, no intelligent person should undertake this exercise. But this is not the case.
Unfortunately, long before appropriate and independent research really got underway; the oil companies had begun the new processes. As with so many ecological issues, the consequences are suffered by those who are left behind once the big companies have taken their riches. If they have plundered your neighborhood in doing so, it is up to you to pick up the pieces.
Different mixtures of chemicals are being utilized by rival firms. Lubricants and anti-foaming agents are amongst the additives in use. There is currently no law compelling disclosure of these additives and consequently no one knows exactly what is being used.
It is fairly certain that the fluid that rises to the surface contains heavy metals. The hydrocarbons that occur naturally also ascend. In addition, the additives would have tainted any fluid in the soil.
We have experiences extremely severe floods and hurricanes in recent times. The citizens of New Orleans can attest to the horror of such natural disasters. Earthquakes and tsunamis have torn countries like Haiti and Japan apart. It is not surprising that people across the globe are fearful of the results of new and potentially dangerous practices.
People are no longer as trusting of large profit-driven businesses that have no concern for the consequences of their greed. The concern about fracking water will increase as the number of areas being worked for natural gases increases. If the rising liquid kills the land, the people will rise against those responsible.
