Homemade Solar Cells – Easy Steps To Follow

One can convert solar energy into electric energy pretty easily. The equipment needed for this energy conversion is called a solar cell. The solar cells can either be bought from the market or can be made at home. The solar cells which are made at home are generally called homemade solar cells. These cells are not as powerful as are the commercial cells but they do serve the purpose of understanding the principles of energy conversion. At times, they can be quite useful for electric needs which do not require high voltage.

Homemade solar cell can be prepared easily at home with materials available at home. Most of the requirements of the solar can be found in the kitchen easily. You have to go to hardware store for few things which are usually not part of the household.

In order to make the solar cell at home, we will either have to use silicon or cuprous oxide. The later one is easy to prepare at home and that is why it is preferred when it comes to homemade solar cells. Copper sheet, alligator clip lead, electric stove, ammeter and a sandpaper or wire brush are all that you need for a homemade solar cell.

Take the copper sheet and cut it in a way that it fits the stove burner. Then clean up your hands in order to remove any grease. Use the wire brush or the sandpaper to clean the copper piece as well. Make sure that the light corrosion is well removed from the copper sheet that you are going to use.

Turn on the stove and place the piece of copper on it. Color pattern of copper will change with time. Keep the stove on until a black coating appears on the sheet. Now it is time to wait until copper cools down. With this cooling process, black coating will disappear and it will take half an hour.

Now place this sheet into an open jar. Cut another piece from the copper sheet of the same size and place it in the jar as well. Make sure that they are not touching each other. You may have to bend these pieces of copper in order to fit in the jar properly.

Make a solution of salt with tap water fill the jar with it. Jar should not be filled completely. Now use wires to connect ammeter to alligator clips. Take this assembly in the sunlight and current will start flowing. This is how homemade solar cells are made with a very simple and easy procedure.
