You can’t live well or long without water. There are any number of things we must have water for in the home everyday like drinking, washing dishes, bathing, doing laundry or watering growing things like gardens. It is even possible to keep extra water on hand in an apartment by using gallon jugs or other suitable small containers that store in small spaces. If you live in a house with yard space, you can store more water in above or below ground water storage tanks or even rain barrels. The more family members you have, the more water you will need to last for a while.
When it comes to having back up electricity you can use a generator or even have solar panels that function. Skylights can help with lighting during the day. When the power company can’t supply what you need, you will need to supply it yourself. Make sure you have an ample supply of fuel for a generator. Many people will put in one solar panel at a time because they are an investment, but they will pay off in the long run. Skylights are a nice feature in a home because they allow in more natural light that is free and very useful when you have no power.
No family can last very long without food. During disasters it is common for stores to sell out of food and what would you and your family have if you couldn’t run down to the local market? Growing a garden and having a supply put away is what many families are doing today. Think about making a food stockpile from the grocery store to have ready in an emergency situation. You want to know you can sustain your family and home temporarily and be ready to do it permanently if you were to have to. Having the ability to be self reliant for as long as necessary is something that you will be very proud you had the foresight to do before things ever get desperate.
